President’s Message for International Workers’ Day 2023

International Workers’ Day, also known as Labour Day, allows workers worldwide to momentarily step away from their routine occupations, promotethe welfare and fair treatment of working individuals while fostering comradeship among them. This global observance provides an opportunity to commemorate the historic triumphs of the labour movement and advocate for ongoing progress towards safeguarding workers’ rights across the globe.

I take this opportunity to salute all workers and individuals at all levels whose tireless efforts have made the difference in the world of work, which impacts lives for the better. This year, the International Labour Organisation (ILO), through various activities, is focusing on fundamental right to a safe and healthy working environment. This focus could not have come at a more critical timewhen the global economic difficulties have impacted working conditions for workers worldwide.

The ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID) is not just a financial institution but a catalyst for transformation across West Africa with a mandate to transform communities, foster inclusive and sustainabledevelopment and improve the livelihoods of the vulnerable populations in the sub-region. We cannot achieve this goal without a committed, engaged, and healthy workforce. Indeed, theBank recognizes that a safe and healthy workplace is not just a legal obligation but a moral imperative a basic human right that we must strive to uphold at all times.

In line with the focus of the ILO, the Board of Directors and management are equally committed to creating an environment where every member of our staff can thrive. This means investing instaff well-being, providing the resources necessary for success, creating a culture of trust, respect, and fostering collaboration.

On this Special Day, let us recommit ourselves to building a world-class institution that will serve as the blueprint for West Africa not forgetting that our work is primarily about people and communities.

Permit me to use this opportunity to appreciate all EBID staff for their selfless dedication to the Bankand to our shared vision of a prosperous, peaceful, and sustainable West Africa. Together, we can transform the region and make a difference that will be felt for generations to come.
