Today, we observe African Women’s Day and honour the women whose leadership, resilience, and innovation drive Africa’s development.<\/p>\n
Across Africa, women lead businesses, transform communities, advance peace, and drive economic growth. However, although women are economic pillars and make up over half the population, they generate only one-third of the continent’s GDP due to ongoing barriers to finance, leadership, and resources.<\/p>\n
The economic benefits of gender equality are clear. Advancing gender equality could raise Africa’s GDP by up to 10 per cent. Closing gender participation gaps in Africa could add US$287 billion to the economy and create 23 million jobs by 2030, according to the 2025 report by the Mastercard Foundation and McKinsey & Company<\/p>\n
Challenges persist. The 2025 Global Findex Database highlights that currently, only 52 per cent of women in Sub-Saharan Africa have access to a financial account, compared to 64 per cent of men. This limits opportunities for entrepreneurship and economic empowerment.<\/p>\n
